A thrift haul; under the weather....

I have a touch of bronchitis and am feeling quite under the weather.  I tend toward bronchitis now after working on the ambulance for so many years, exposed to sick people and working in inclement weather.
Its been two years since my last bout and I suppose I was due, but man, I feel terrible.
I still managed to pull together an outfit I'm very happy with and do some productive thrifting though!

I really like this black/brown combination.  I'm particularly happy about it since the sweater and dress are thrifted.

Its really starting to get cold, so I tried out fleece lined tights today.  They kept me super warm all day and I love them.

....the brown leather belt is thrifted too....

This closeup of the sweater doesn't really capture the pretty colors woven in....

This is what I wore to host my Lia Sophia jewelry party on Saturday.  Its hard to tell in this picture, but the bottom is a skirt.  I've had the skirt for years and I adore it; it has pretty button detail down the front and a slit that ends just above the knee.  I really loved it with this thrifted Ann Taylor top.

I had to share a picture of my tablescape; I think it looked much prettier in person...the ladies really enjoyed it.

A few of my guest enjoying the company and jewelry.......

The LS advisor, Kori, transformed my living room into a jewelry showplace....oh my gosh does she have jewelry.  It was fun to see all the pieces in person rather than just in the catalog.  I fell in love with one piece that I didn't even like in the catalog.  I earned $70.00 in free jewelry plus some deeply discounted items.  I can't wait to get them and share them with you!

On to the thrift haul....this 100% cashmere Garnet Hill sweater is so soft.  The picture doesn't do it justice, but its really pretty....I'm not familiar with GH...does anyone know anything about them?

Pardon my wrinkles...I was excited to get my thrift haul posted and didn't even notice them.  The color on this Ralph Lauren turtleneck sweater is a dark, dark olive green.  I've actually been searching for a navy blue turtleneck just like this and thought I found one today...but when I tried it on it was SEE-THROUGH!  It didn't come home with me; but this one did.  I never imagined a see-through turtleneck existed!

This is such a cute sweater to wear with jeans.  Its a Tommy Hilfiger and it cost me only $5.00!  I'm sure it was well spent, because I think will be a frequent flier in my wardrobe.

Basic grey skirt.  Its a mediocre brand that isn't terrible, but is also not terribly high quality either in terms of durability.  I won't say the name of the store brand, but I will stell you that I no longer shop in that store because the majority of their items end up 'pill-y'.  Still, for $3.00 I am willing to rescue this skirt from the textile recycling mill.  Although I don't like 'fast fashion', I do think its a good thing to purchase a couple of 'ff' pieces since they already exist.

Another less than high quality piece; this dress is adorable though, and its perfect for dance parties where I sweat quite a bit.  This is the back view........

and this is the front; the asymmetrical hemline is really cute on.

...another skirt from that retail store who's name I didn't mention above.  This is a navy blue sweater knit that will work for fall winter....and another $3.00 bargain.

Oh, my love!  Although it looks black, its actually a dark, dark navy Ann Taylor dress.  I almost passed this by because its labeled a size four.  I'm most certainly NOT a size four....I'm a solid 8, but I decided to try it on because it was stretchy and only $6.00.....yay, it fit.
The lesson in this for thrifters is to not pass something by based on an arbitrary number on the tag.  Oh yeah, I should mention that the grey skirt is a size 12.  You never know how sizes will run.

$2.00 for this CAbi camisole top.  I had heard of CAbi through other blogs but am not familiar with them.  It think this will be very pretty under a sweater or blazer.

My super bargain; this Banana Republic which still had tags on cost me $5.00  I don't think its going to make the rounds till summertime...but isn't it pretty?

The last find of this haul is a very pretty evening dress.  The style is a dream style for me, but I took and $8.00 chance on it because I'm not sure this mermaid style is right for my figure.

Please tell me what you think....I can see it pulls a little across the front, but I'm still working on losing a few pounds so that problem will resolve 5 lbs from now.
I would really like some feedback on this.  I will be wearing heels with the dress which will balance me out a bit by creating height. I will also be adding a really bold necklace to add some balancing width at the top.  I really don't want to give it up; it has potential to be that perfect old Hollywood glam dress.
The dress is so pretty....it has lovely chiffon godets set into the hemline and pretty movement when walking.  I just love it.  What do you think? Is this a yes or a no?

I'm going to do some rest, relaxation and oh yeah....writing papers with a Saturday deadline...

Hugs to you......
Lisa

  7. I love the black dress - you look va-va-voom!

I will still thrift ff pieces, if the quality is adequate. Good for you for not paying attention to the sizing - I've found Ann Taylor is crazy sizing. I have a pair of size 2 jeans by them - I'm so not a size 2! My current ABBA blouse is CAbi - great quality!

I hope you feel better soon, hon!

  9. About the see-through turtleneck: it's probably a layering piece for warmth. I have two, and I bought DH one -- silk for thin, warm first layers.

  12. Bronchitis is nasty stuff, I hope you get over it quickly!
I always like seeing your thrifting hauls, that orange br dress is gorgeous, i really like the bright color and the shape. The top of it is adorable, that would be so cute with a brown or navy blazer. (But then I want to pair a blazer with everything!) I did laugh a little over your "mystery" store, I've been trying to quess which store it is based on the garments. (I've heard of Garnet Hill before, I think they're a Brand similar to Coldwater Creek, fairly affordable practical clothing that lasts forever.)
I hope you feel better soon dear!

I really love that orange dress...looking forward to wearing it in the spring, although I could wear it now with the navy blazer you mention. The nave blazer has been elusive, I just can't find the right one!

    1. Did you get to visit any thrift shops in California?
Hope you have a safe flight and a wonderful reunion with your husband!
Thank you for the compliment. Come on and visit.....I wish the GSA was in Chicago; I'm an hour away from Chicago and there are lots of awesome shops there (though maybe not so many thrift shops, but lots of vintage shops)
